Wildlands and Woodlands
Central Massachusetts
Emerging Project Area
The Northeast Wilderness Trust is actively engaged with partners in Massachusetts to identify properties appropriate for wilderness level protection. The Trust is part of the Wildlands and Woodlands Initiative, which envisions protecting one-half of all land in Massachusetts (approximately 2.5 million acres) from development, including five percent of the Commonwealth as wildland. The initiative is spearheaded by the Harvard Forest in Petersham, Massachusetts. Harvard Forest is also coordinating an effort to enroll additional wilderness land in ongoing ecological monitoring studies, which may someday include Northeast Wilderness Trust properties.
