Tewksbury Brook

Center Sandwich, New Hampshire
408 acres
Forever-Wild Easement; Completed Project

In 2009, the Northeast Wilderness Trust received a donation of a conservation easement on a 408-acre property in Sandwich, NH. The Tewksbury Brook property is named for the small stream that runs along its eastern border. Abutting the 35,800-acre Sandwich Range Wilderness Area of the White Mountain National Forest, the land provides habitat for a myriad of species and is an important connective corridor between the White Mountains and the Ossipee Mountains.

The Lakes Region of New Hampshire is experiencing a high rate of development, and the community-minded conservation donors wanted to see Tewksbury Brook remain as wilderness and wildlife habitat. The original owners of the Tewksbury Brook property were so committed to its conservation that they donated the forever-wild easement to Northeast Wilderness Trust, and donated the remaining fee-interest to the Lakes Region Conservation Trust, based in Center Harbor, New Hampshire. The Tewksbury Brook property brings the Northeast Wilderness Trust’s total conserved acreage in the Squam Lakes region to nearly 700 acres.
